Keyword Tool For Google Adwords

Author: Erik Hammond

If you want to run an effective Google Adwords campaign, you'll find it necessary to learn to use the Google Adwords keyword tool. This handy little tool allows you to select keywords and establish how much you are willing to pay per click for ads that appear on web pages and search engine results pages that contain the identified keywords.

Choosing the right keywords is very important to your success in operating an Adwords campaign. You want to reach an audience that is likely to want and need your product or service so that, once they arrive at your website, they will convert to a sale or lead. Having people click on your ad does nothing but cost you money unless you maintain a high conversion rate.

When choosing the keyword or keywords that you want to target, keep in mind the keywords that your website is based upon. Those are, at least in part, the keywords you will want to select for advertising. However, you may have keywords on your website that are much broader than those that you want to use for your Adwords campaign. Whereas a person selling classic car parts online might use "auto parts" as a keyword on their website, it would certainly be a very bad choice for an Adword keyword. Driving traffic that are seeking auto parts for late model cars will simply leave the website as soon as they see what is offered and, since you choose the keyword, the click would still cost you money. Instead, focus on keywords that are very directly related to what you offer such as, in the case here, "classic car parts", for example. That way, only those people searching for and visiting websites related to classic cars and parts for those cars will see your Adwords campaign.

The Google Adwords keyword tool allows you to add and remove keywords at any time you choose. You aren't tied to using keywords that aren't working for you for any specific length of time. If you find a keyword you have selected is working very poorly, go to the keyword tool and remove that keyword from your campaign. You might replace it with a better keyword, or simply drop the keyword and not replace it at all.

The greatest thing about Google Adwords is the flexibility. You can change anything about your campaign at any time you want. Keywords that prove effective can be changed to a higher price per click while those that offer little traffic can be changed or removed. Find keywords that drive traffic that converts and stick with those keywords.

A great alternative , even better than the google adwords tool is the new keyword elite which has more options and will give you the exact adwords pricing for each keyword and per search engine as well as competition, adsense high paying keywords and so on.

Where did Google’s Traffic Estimator go?
Currently trying to get keyword stats and found that Google’s Traffic Estimator Sandbox has a login preceding use of the tool.

Anyone know if this is an intentional move by Google? I wouldn’t be surprised… now they can link all search term research to Google adwords buyers!

Ideas/thoughts… am I becoming too paranoid of Google’s unyielding (desire for total) power?

You can create a new Google account different from your Adwords account. I have a different account for accessing Google Webmaster Tools, a different one for Adwords and a different one for Blogger, and a different one for Adsense.

Can you use Google Adword Keyword Tool for keyword research?
I’m doing keyword research, and I’ve used Overtures keyword tools but I’m confused with Google’s.

I would like to know if the Google’s Adword tool’s “search volume trend” data can be used for keyword research.

i.e is this the data that people type into Google over a certain period of time to search for things? Or are these popular keywords that Adwords advertisers use to bid for keywords? I

    A bit confused????

    • Anonymous says:

The AdWords Keyword Tool can be used for keyword research. Keep in mind that all AdWords users have access to this tool.

Search volume trend is based on data that people type into Google over a certain period of time to search. From the AdWords help center:

This means that, for every 12 month period, we display how much traffic you would have received on the broad-matched version of the keyword if you targeted all countries and all languages.

The graph represents traffic trends during the last twelve months. Each bar in the graph is shown relative to the keyword’s overall performance for the twelve month period.

You should be getting paid whatever your agreement with your employer provides. If you don’t like it, then re-negotiate.

I’ve seen many ads on CraigsList.org seeking to hire CPC/PPC managers for low wages, often part-time, often seeking “interns” for free.

When the job is defined as “CPC manager” or “Paid Search Manager” or similar, I see posts on various job boards with proposed salaries that range from $30,000 to $90,000.

I also know many consultants who charge $100 to $200 per hour for “essentially the same services,” but generally these consultants have substantial experience and skill. Sometimes, they have access to sophisticated software tools, some developed in house and some licensed from third parties.

A year ago, the most common arrangement I heard about (for outside consultants) was a “percentage of spend,” which is ludicrous: it rewards waste and discourages efficiency. While that may still be the “dominant” model, it is fast being supplanted by other, more complex fee structures.

If you are that good at the above list, why don’t you do affiliate marketing as a business for yourself on the side? You could make more doing it for yourself than you could getting paid as an employee.

Do you have a non-compete clause? (probably not if you are only getting paid minimum wage)

I make a fair amount doing affiliate marketing. I’m interested in discussing what you do. Email me if you are interested.

Best ways to find relevant keywords and keyword traffic when building an organic SEO campaign?
I am looking for any tools and tricks which may help me put together a solid SEO campaign – in the past, I used Overture’s bid tool (now extinct) to help expose keywords and traffic trends. Google’s Adwords tool is OK, but it does not report much for the niche terms which relate to my site, and its “suggested terms” are far too general to target.

Are there any tools which have worked well for you?

    Any strategies you might recommend?
Sorry if I came across as too general – I am most interested in others’ suggestions for tracking keyword traffic and keyword suggestion as it applies to multiple-word queries.

For example, does “green and blue widgets with dongles” get more traffic than “purple and blue widgets with dongles”?

      Hi
the most effective strategy is to know your market, the sector your clients work in and the jargon they use – this will influence your keyword strategy. another method I have used is to look at competitor sites and explore their keyword strategy!!

SEO of this nature should be no different from any other marketing strategy and this is about knowing your customers and their requirements.

      good luck.

How can I better optimize my website for more traffic?
I am a beginner but have learned a lot about search engine optimization (SEO). We have worked on Google AdWord campaigns, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and used Google Analytics. We used a broad search as well as an industry specialized search, which has obviously been more cost effective.

I have recently submitted our company and link to multiple industry directories with higher PageRank than ours. I have used free keyword tools found in AdWords, Analytics, and Search Marketing, respectively, as well as the free tool on wordtracker.

Also, we have recently created static pages to our web site for added content. Hopefully our recent steps (directory submission, upping our bids in PPC programs, and creating content based pages) will work.

Can anyone help on ways to direct more traffic to our site? Help us maximize our ROI? We usa a dynaminc web site but want to raise our PageRank and site visits.

    Thank you,

I would agree with the previous post. Make your site for people not search engines.

      A few SEO tips.
A unique title tag on each page would be a plus
Don’t worry too much about your page rank. What your are after is improved rankings in the search engine results.
What keywords are you targeting? My suggestion — if you are having success with PPC then see which keywords are bringing you the most sales and then begin to optimize your site for those terms.
You should consider adding even more content to your site this will reduce code bloat. Optimal # to shoot for here is 20% of the info in your source to be code and the rest content.

Another thought…begin to optimize your site for the specific products that you offer. So that way when I go to Google and search for a specific power adapter your site will show. The way to do that is content and editing some of the other on page SEO factors like a title tag.

We’ve got some SEO tips that we deliver out each day. You can subscribe on our site http://www.reachd.com/Newsletter

How to reduce my google adwords cost per click to $0.10?
I am trying out google adwords for the first time and well I find it so expensive and a bit confused whether I am doing something wrong.

I used the Google keyword tool to generate some keywords. Chose those that were estimated Avg. CPC to be about $0.11.
But they were not activated with a comment asking me to raise minimum bid to $15.

I don’t quite understand why when it is only estimated $0.11 per click and yet asking for $15 now. Can you help tell me why or what I am doing wrong? Or is it a standard thing to ask for $15?

Also I obliged to $15 minimum bid and its been two days and still not a single click. I believe $15 is a way expensive bid and yet I don’t seem to be gaining any traffic.

Btw is the $15 amount for per click or wat? What am I doing wrong?

    The keywords for reference:
    1. free targeted website traffic
    2. increase web site traffic for free
    3. free traffic to my website

Do advice please. Your help greatly appreciated.

What can I do to start making money on the Internet fast?
I need some genuine insight and details on how you got STARTED to making that first $1 or $100 on the Internet. What are some real genuine and HONEST ways of making money on the Internet?

Please, don’t be vague like create blogs or websites with unique interesting content and earn money through affiliate marketing or contextual advertising (Adsense, Adbrite, YPN, etc). I really want details on how YOU got STARTED to become successful making money on the Internet.

Please do not recommend me filling out surveys or PTC (Paid-to-Click) sites. You can hardly make any decent money out of FREE surveys which takes a good amount of time just to make a lousy dollar. Believe me. I have tried with several “top notch” sites like CashCrate and others. I do not want to go this route.

I want to make a decent living off of the Internet working full time even putting in 10 additional hours every week.

Where can I do keyword research and search volume research to come up with niche ideas for websites? Overture Keyword Tool no longer exists. I need a good free keyword tool besides Google’s Adwords keyword tool. I heard Google’s keyword tool really doesn’t give accurate results. What did you do to come up with your niche ideas?

I assume most Internet entrepreneurs make money through multiple streams of Internet incomes through affiliate marketing, contextual advertising, multiple websites (sometimes in mass quantity) domaining (buying & selling domain names), Forex investing. List other ideas as well.

Thank you. I would really appreciate your help.

There are a lot of ways to earn money on the net. Just fine the method you’re most comfortable with, and the hardwork involved would just be nothing. I can provide a few sites that may help you.

In case you change your mind about PTC sites, here’s a site that teaches how to get started with Paid-to-Click (PTC) programs on the net:

If you want to earn by making your own website, earning from ads and affiliate marketing, this site teaches just that. It’s so easy to learn, but takes quite some effort and a LOT of ideas:

      http://www.ThirtyDayChallenge.com/challenge/23534

And lastly, a good site that allows you to find jobs as a freelancer — data entry, programming, copyreading, etc.

What’s wrong with my google adwords account? How to optimize?
Here is a question. I have [specifically targeted] ads and only 2 or 3
advertising on those key words what so ever but my costs keep going up. I’m on the first ad shown position but every few days later, the bid goes up 0.20 to .25 to 0.50 to 1.20…. Why does this happen?

For certain keywords. a day later, some of my ads are not displaying, using ‘ad diagnostic tool’, I got this message:

“Although your ad is showing, its rank is not high enough to place it
on the first page of search results.”
but few hrs ago, I’m on the first ad shown position. What’s the deal?!

and some keywords get the message:
‘The user is located outside your campaign’s geo-targeting area.’
but I got impressions before, why will get this message?

Anyone could help? Thanks in advance.

      But check for these things:
      1. Is your page relevant?
      2. Competition in your market – is anyone trying to outbid you?
      3. CTR -is that good?
      4. Try exact and phrase matching for these keywords and check the results.

Google displays the ad randomly. Plus there are various factors google consider while displaying your ad. First the price per click. If your bid is higher than others then your ad will be displayed on top than the once who have bid less.. The second one could be even if you have bid higher than other and your ad is not getting any clicks, Google will give more preference to the ones that get more clicks. I cannot say what the costs are cos it totally depends on the keyword popularity and competition. If the keyword is highly competitive you might have to bid more for that. So depending on whether u have bid more or getting more clicks your ads are displayed. For better results it is good to be creative with your ads and make sure that it stands out and that people are willing to click on it.

    GOOGLE ANALYTICS QUESTION?
Some months ago.. google allowed users to ad a code to the their source page which allowed me to ‘drill’ down into a campaign I am tracking, then further into groups and then into the groups wherein I could view my keywords that are in my Google Adwords groups. From here, I could set parameter to ‘user defined’. This would allow me to see the actual keyword searches customers were typing which were linking up to my ad group keywords.
This is an amazing tool for parsing out negative keywords to ad to groups as well as new positive performing keywords to ad. I have been paying about $400 a month for a software named ClickLab. We started setting up all of our marketing campaigns to be tracked by Google Analytics: Yahoo, MSN and a host of marketing feeds = Price Graber, Google Products, Shopzilla etc.
I swear at first I could drill down to the levels described above with for all of those accounts; I had told my employer he could drop ClickLab since we now had that level of scrutiny for free through Analytics. Now.. I can only drill down into Google groups. I can now only drill down as far as group level for all non google campaigns. Furthermore.. I can no longer get ecommerce data for non google campaigns = conversion rate, revenue per conversion and conversions.

    1) What’s the point of them allowing us to track other campaigns if we can’t see performance stats?
    2) Is anyone out there familiar with this scenario?
    3) Does anyone know how to get around to doing with my non google campaigns what I can now only do with google groups = get down to the level where I can view actual customer keyword searches?

    • Anonymous says:

      Hi,

For non-adwords campaigns, Google analytics can only capture the data that you are passing to them by tagging your destination url’s.

For all these non-adwords campaigns, Google analytics show you the keywords customers actually typed in get to your ads. However, if you want to see the keywords you used in the campaigns and the keywords customers actually typed, so that you can figure out the negative keywords you need to use, there is a trick you can use. Refer to this page http://www.ga-experts.com/blog/2006/11/how-to-get-detailed-ppc-keyword-data-from-google-analytics/ to find out how to do this.

How to export Google Keyword Results to Spreadsheet?
Hello, I am looking for an OpenOffice Calc or Excel sheet that let’s me import results of Google Adwords Keyword Tools to analyze it afterwards.
    Maybe with Google API?
I tried to import the csv file values you can store at the bottom of he result page. But I am not very good in converting the values into clear diagram which I can use to make decisions.
    Who can help?
    Thank you

The cheapest, simplest option for storing your keyword search results is using Google documents. Choose the cvs option at the bottom of the Keyword tool screen.

Another benefit of Google docs is that your list remains on Google’s computer and remains safe. You don’t have to worry about viruses or a sudden hard drive failure on your own machine. You can get back to update your list anytime by entering Google Documents. Google docs can be accessed from any computer, so if you have a little downtime at work…

Which is the Best Keywords Research Tools you use so far?
I have tried the FREE keyword suggestion tool by WordTracker and the Keyword Tool from Google Adwords. Both work ok, but I just feel that they are just not comprehensive enough in terms of features. What tools do you use? Why is it better?

    • Anonymous says:

Free versions there are FREE keyword suggestion tool and Google Keyword Tool. This work fine, but I still prefer the better supported paid version such as Keyword Elite and PPC Web Spy.

They offer more indepth stats on the keywords and trends, that way I will be able to better tune my PPC campaign. Remember look at trends and put the related keywords in your PPC. Hope it help.

Google Adwords is like an advertising auction. YOU ARE HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO BE SEEN WITH 0.01 AS YOUR BID. There are many other businesses competing to advertise. Google would rather take 0.99 for a click rather than 0.01. The lower your bid, the less likely you are to appear on results.

Google has a tutorial on where to put meta tags, specifically your verification code. It’s just another html tag you put AT THE TOP of your html coding in the section.

Google considers your site valuable if legit sites link to you. Your site doesn’t seem legit and noone links to you, but that’s just my opinioni.
What’s your domain? Giving us the info would help …
      http://www.google.com is a domain
      http://www.google.com/index.html is a webpage
      http://yoursite.freesites.com or similar is lousy
      http://freesites.com/~yoursite is also lousy

Free websites … you won’t make any business with those.

Very interesting Search Engine Optimization observation: Keywords?
After using the free Google Adwords key tool on https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal I noticed that some queries were incredibly interesting or possibly way off. For instance, set the match type to EXACT as opposed to BROAD and type in the following type of query and see what happens,
“City” Homes for sale vs “City” “State Abreviation” homes for sale as in …

[Chicago Homes For Sale] vs [Chicago il homes for sale]
[san francisco homes for sale] vs [san francisco ca homes for sale]

This occurs for every other city state combo. Why?

The results that this generates is unreal, literally I think. Please explain. Ten points, and much gratitude from me.

    Google adwords research tool?
    Hi,

Does anyone know a good Google Adwords analysing tool out there? I have seen products such as:

    - Adwords Analyser
    - PPC Bully

    (PPC Bully costs $1497!)

I’d like to start researching competition for several Google PPC campaigns I am starting. The object will be to research niches and see what keywords are being bidded on vs. the estimated traffic and cost of those keywords.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance,
    Alex

What is a lot of traffic?? for my website?
I think im shooting for around 16,000 visitors based off of google adwords tool. Is that a lot? Im trying to generate sales. OH AND THATS WITH 3 different keywords

    • Anonymous says:

It depends on the amount per day. No amount is actually “Too High” per say, but you want to make sure you can get the highest amount possible. The more interested visitors you get the more sales you will receive.

Once you review your key words (make sure they aren’t to competitive!) you should average a decent steady flow of traffic. Now there are better ways to rank Naturally in the search engines that would save you lots of money, but make take a bit more time.

Back links can raise your websites visits, thus ranking your site much higher. However, you will want to do press releases, articles, blogs, and videos with content related to your website, it’s products and services. It may sound like a lot and it is, but once you know what you want to do it’s not a large work load.

    Google keyword tool on adwords?
    Hi all,
I am using the google keyword tool in ad words and when I type in “nhs southampton” the column which shows the number of local searches has a figure of less than 10 and the total number of global searches has a figure of 5100 searches. When I click on the help buttons the pop up tells me that the local search are figures taken from your own country so I thought the local search column would be higher.
Could somebody point out what I am missing?
    Thanks,
    Eddie

    • Anonymous says:

Well, the statistics are absolutely correct, Even I checked “nhs southampton” and got 5400 global searches and less than 10 local searches. Local here means the whole country.
So what it means is that only less than 10 searches are made PER MONTH from your country in Google ( estimated average) and same keyword is searched 5400 times worldwide.

May be it is not a very popular keyword, But if it specifies very close description of what you sell, then you must sign up with this keyword (and other related keywords as well )
You can also try misspelled keywords http://www.greyorgray.com/keyword-products.html here is a few detailed about some very good keyword tools.

a question about Google Adwords Keyword Tool.?
I am new to blogging and am planning to start a new blog. For this purpose I have found a niche and when I went to Google Adwords Keyword Tool to check a few related keywords, I found that the Advertiser Competition bar was full meaning it was very high for my keyword. The Global Monthly Search Volume for the same was 40,500. However, when I Google putting my keyword in quotes like “keyword” , I find 19000 odd results.

My query is whether it’ll be easy to build a blog in this niche which would be on top of Google search for the related keyword?

I am completely new to SEO and am so asking such a query.

Google AdWords Help. 10 PTS BEST ANSWER.?
I have a resume writing business and I advertise on Google Adwords. I had my account suspended because I had used more than 1 voucher on 2 accounts (I read online I could), but I guess I was wrong. Well they unsuspended my account yesterday (12/4) and I had my ads running last night and today (12/5). My budget ran out so I upped my budget. Here comes my 1st question (IF YOU CAN’T ANSWER ALL OF MY QUESTIONS, I WILL BE HAPPY WITH ANY ANSWER)…does the budget change take effect the next day? Next…I did the keyword diagnostic tool and it said “your ads aren’t running, please contact us” (this was after my budget ran out and I upped it). Why is it doing this? Google Adwords doesn’t have a contact line (google in general doesn’t), which I think is absolutely RIDICULOUS! Google is the #1 website and they don’t have a customer contact line (well one that you can speak to a live person). You email them and only get automated responses. I hate it. Google adwords brings me a lot of business so that is the only reason I am dealing with it, but it DRIVES ME CRAZY. I am just confused. Anyone else have similar problems? Will my ads run tomorrow (12/6)? Please help! 10 PTS BEST ANSWER. Thank you!

Just be patient – the google adwords support team are in my experience very good and if you have sent them an email detailing your problem, I’m sure they will be in touch with you
      shortly.

In the meantime double check your adwords campaign and make sure you haven’t made any errors or not complied with googles editorial guidelines.

If you have done everything correctly – including setting the correct minimum bid, your ad should show up almost immediatley!

You need to study and select some keywords that are related to your site such as your domain and add them to your website. Then submit it to search engine. After a time, it may come in top 10 from the search result. For example, the keyword: topbuysell is related to domain http://www.topbuysell.com . And it ranks number one on the search result.

Understanding & applying keyword outputs from Google Adwords tool?
    Hello,

I entered the URL of a web page from some one else’s website into the Google Adwords tool. However, I do not understand the output.

Firstly, from where do the grouped keywords originate? In some cases, the keywords did not even appear exactly that way on the page. (Example ‘gateS (7)’ appears but the source page’s only has ‘gate’ within the title, keyword and body tags). Is ‘gates’ more popular for searchers than gate???

More importantly, how do I use the groups? For example, do I apply all those keywords with good results for other columns (advertiser compeitiion, local search volume & global monthly search volume) if I wanted my site to appear in the numbers 1 to 3 spots? Within which tags (title, meta keyword, meta description or body tags should I place these keywords?

    Thanks!
I just want to use the keywords, not bid on them.

    • Anonymous says:

      Universal Citizen,

=== “Where do the grouped keywords originate from?” ===

They come from the bank of keyword combinations searched for by people on Google. They are mapped with advertising intelligence coming from Google AdWords.

=== “How do I use the keyword groups?” ===

First part is keyword combinations that Google relates directly to the content (page or keyword list) submitted. So a reported keyword may not appear on the list or page to the extent that Google sees a direct relationship between the two (e.g., singular/plural, synonyms, acronyms).

Second part is a list of keywords Google suggested thatn widen a little bit (sometines too much) the scope of related topics.

=== “Within which tags should I place these keywords?” ===

The one you mentioned, plus, among others:

      - URL (i.e., file name, directory, domain, subdomain)
      - title
      - meta description (for search result snippet)
      - meta keywords (less important nowadays, useless for Google)
      - headings (h1, h2, etc.)
      - bold/italic
      - alt of images
      - title of anchors
      - text of anchors
      - all over the body (of course)

Note: using the submission of URL to generate KWs is valuable to see how Google understand your page, i.e., would qualify your page for a good rank within search results. To get ideas on KW’s to write about, better iterate thru the tool by submitting KW you deem interesting to write about.

    • Anonymous says:

This happened to me yesterday as well, but I was able to figure it out. Google apparently changed the results for the phrase “google keyword tool” to display this site first:
      http://www.googlekeywordtool.com

This is actually the google keyword tool box. Google is attempting to phase out the old one and now labels it as the “external” google keyword tool. Here is the link to access it:
      https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

They will most likely keep that link live for several years, but I encourage you to try and use the new keyword tool box. It actually has some really great features and after you learn the new software, is fairly simple to use.

When attaining backlinks (links to your website from other websites) it’s important to focus on websites with high pageranks. Even if a website links to you and you’re the only one they link to, if no one links to that website it’s useless.

Alexa.com offers one of the most effective ways of getting link juice. Enter some of your competitor’s websites into alexa.com and click sites linking in. You can see where they get most of their traffic, where they advertise, etc. It’s a very simple, yet effective way of finding ways to get targeted traf

Another effective way of attaining targeted backlinks is to find websites of the same topic as your own that aren’t direct competitors. For example: If you run a petstore, find a website talking about caring for pets that has a links page, and ask to be included in those links.

I’ve also listed some more generic websites designed to help websites like yours attain a higher pagerank.

Aboutus.org is a wiki to websites, allowing you to write an article about your website. If you write a professional sounding article, you can email them and get the “nofollow” tags removed, allowing Google to see you’re linked to from them. http://www.aboutus.org/ProFollow

Joeant.com is a directory of websites, primarily shopping related. You can choose exactly the right section for your website to be added to, and get targeted visitors. Adding your url is only $40, or, if you choose, you can volunteer to become an editor of a category, and attempt to add your website for free. Doing it the free way doesn’t guarantee acceptance, and delays the date of your website being added.

Dir.Yahoo.com is another directory of websites. This one has a much higher rate of visitation than any other, but is relatively expensive at $300 per year to list.

Stumbleupon.com, delicious.com, and mixx.com are all social bookmarking websites in which you can submit websites for others to comment on, and vote on. Digg.com is for uploading news stories, and is a very similar concept.

I hope this helps. If it does, please vote for this answer.
