My firm uses TABS for billing. The first firm I worked at also used TABS, then just before I left then started using PracticeMaster for case management and calendaring. It took a while to set up and change over from Outlook for ongoing cases, but it was worth it. PracticeMaster will sync with Palm and with Outlook and I think many other calendaring programs. They will send you a demo if you are interested. Unfortunately I don’t have much to compare it too, but they seem to work well.

I am excellent at Microsoft Office, Desktop publishing, Internet and library research, problem solving, and working with a team. I am not good at answering questions on the spot, handling telephone calls, and being perfect.

I have been unsuccessful with job hunting, and I am trying to find ideas where to look next. I am not just out of college. I have no idea why I am not being hired, except that in my location there are not many jobs available. I do not think my appearance is a factor, but I could be wrong. I am also not sure whether I appear to be desperate for a job.

For research, there’s nothing better than Bloomberg. The cost, however, is significant ($1,200-1,400 per month), and you really need some training to learn how to use it (and the APIs that come with it). Training is free though.

For tracking, you really don’t need much more than what your broker gives you.

What part of the US DoD budget is attributed to software licenses, versus research?
For example, if a research effort required the purchase of 30 licenses of windows, would that be budgeted as RDT&E money, or would that be procurement? Where might I find information to assess the values?

    • Anonymous says:

It would be billed first to that individual section, so lets say that the DoD officers guarding the gates needed something, that money would come out of the DoD Gate Guard budget. You probably can’t find it if it is not on the DoD.gov website. The government really doesn’t want you knowing exactly how they spend there money because then there would be questions and people liable and all that “nasty” stuff. I am assuming if it would go into their software budget because it is software, and DoD allows people to have copies of software so I am sure that it is the software budget and the research group just takes what they need from it.

There are many choices, but first you need to narrow down exactly how you will use this. For simple linear programming problems, there are many excellent open-source solutions.

Here’s a link to a good discussion, with references to commercial and open-source packages:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_programming

For the past three years I’ve been working with LindoAPI from Lindo Systems of Chicago (www.lindo.com). It’s an excellent choice. It includes an Excel plug-in (“What’s Best?”), a stand-alone optimizer, and a module you can connect to your own software. There’s a try-it license which gives you access to all the software. When you’re ready to scale up to larger problems, you buy the license for the problem size you must solve (like number of variables, number of constraints, and features like quadratic optimization, integer programming, barrier method, and so on).

What is the best site or software to research family history for family tree?

    • Anonymous says:

The best site depends on your ancestry. Huguenot.com would not be much good to you if you were Chinese or Cherokee, but if you were a Huguenot, it would be ideal.

Ancestry.com is to genealogy what HBO is to movie buffs – you pay for it and get premium service. There are 400,000 free sites devoted to Genealogy.

The best software depends on your purse and operating system. There isn’t any software that will do the work for you. The people who wrote “Roots Magic” have a program called “GenSmarts” that will make suggestions, based on what you have already found. I haven’t tried it.

There ARE programs that will record and arrange your research. Trying to do Genealogy without a program is like writing a novel with a pencil and yellow pad, instead of “Word”.

      The four most popular programs:

The Mormons will let you download PAF for free.

Roots Magic ($29) is my favorite.

Family Tree Maker ($39, but you get access to some data bundled with it) is the market leader in the USA.

Reunion ($79) is the only one of the four that works on a Mac.

You can Google “Genealogy Program Comparison” to see what reviewers think. There are another dozen popular programs and hundreds of less popular ones.

I used the endnote function on Microsoft word to automatically generate a huge monster reference list at the end of the paper. Now I need to format this huge reference list into CSE format. Do you know of any software that will allow me to do this without having to re-type each reference into the new program before it will format it? I am hoping to find a software program that will let me highlight the entire reference list, press a button, and have the program automatically format it for me. Any such software program out there?

How do I research partnership/licensing model for my software-as-a-service website?
I run a Saas website and charge a monthly fee. Recently I have been approach by overseas companies interesting in a licensing agreement for the software. I’m cautious about diluting my business value through licences distribution and need to do some homework on what models are currently in use elsewhere. Appreciate any information!

    • Anonymous says:

A number of considerations come to mind:

First, do some research on the overseas companies who have approached you, and make sure you are comfortable with their professionalism, and their knowledge of your target market segment. Are they easy for you to communicate with when you need to? Would your customers be comfortable doing business with them?

Second, consider which overseas markets you are thinking about covering through them, and how successful your software service is likely to be there. Some Asian markets have a lot of pirated software, for example, making it hard for software vendors (even if using a SaaS model) to do business there. Pricing is also going to be different.

Third, make sure your contract with the overseas company is not a one-off license back to you, but involves some percentage of revenue or subscriptions on an ongoing basis.

Finally, be careful about cannibalizing your existing market… read this article on that topic: http://www.software-marketing-advisor.com/software-pricing.html

How do I use SPSS software for my research data?
I’m doing my research project and i’m supposed to use SPSS to handle my data but i’m clueless. My research is titled ‘Female deaths due to cardiac causes: 10 years Autopsy review’. Any tips would be highly appreciated.
My research data only includes the details of females. Their age, marital status, body weight, race and the cause of death. The research is intended to figure out the most prevalent cardiac causes and the relationship between the COD and the victims based on their details taken from the autopsy reports. I don’t have to compare these data with men’s data as it a retrospective study and focused mainly on females.

    • Anonymous says:

You will need to provide more information in order facilitate a useful answer; specifically, a lot depends on what kind of information you have, and what kinds of questions you are interested in answering.

Ideally, you will have information on a fairly large number of patients. Your title indicates that you’re looking at autopsy data for women who have died of cardiac disease, but hopefully you have some information on men as well in order to compare them, as well as information about the general characteristics of the patients — age, racial and ethnic background, perhaps something on financial status or diet, anything that seems relevant.

More importantly, you need to decide what you’re trying to find out. Maybe you’re trying to find out what makes a woman likely to die of cardiac disease, in which case logistic regression would probably be the standard procedure. Maybe you just want to know if the women who die of cardiac disease are older than women dying of other causes, or maybe whether people in one city have higher rates of death than those in another, each of which would require a different statistical approach.

If you add more specific information, I will be able to address your problem in greater specificity.

EDIT: so it sounds like what you probably want to do is a logistic regression — this will tell you whether the different aspects of the patient’s background information makes them more likely to die of cardiac disease than of another cause.

The first thing you will want to do is create a new variable coded 1 for a cardiac death and 0 for every other (non-missing) value. This can be accomplished using the recode — into different variables option under the “transform” menu.

Not all versions of SPSS come bundled with the capability to run logistic regressions; hopefully yours does. It is located under the Analyze — Regression menu; it should say “binary logistic.”

This is not a particularly simple procedure, and if you’re not familiar with the statistics behind it you will want to consult a text book or an instructor. The basic ideas are that the coefficients produced in the regression reflect how strongly the independent variables are related to the probability of dying of cardiac disease, where higher values meaning it is more likely.

    • Anonymous says:

besides the computer software courses, you will need courses in electronics

Actually the electronics courses are more important than the computer courses because that is where design and development comes from.

While it can be done with less than a college degree, very few companies will take the chance on hiring someone without one.

This is really something you should talk to your teacher or education liason officer about, instead of asking on the internet. No one knows you better than you do.

Software engineering is progamming oriented. You create software and write code, maintain it with bugfixes and deploy them.

Operations research (O.R.) is the discipline of applying advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. It typically involves using math, statistical data, and algorithms etc. to create decisions.

Hello, I need a last min Christmas gift and I just found out my mom really wants to start researching our family tree. I dont want to mess around with something that is a waste of her time and my money. Can someone that has alot of experience with this give me your opinion on what is on the market that is user friendly but good quality software to put on her computer to help her get started and assist her to completion? Thanks!

    • Anonymous says:

You will probably get as many answers as you have users for this question and most of us have tried more than one of the products. I have tried PAF, Legacy, Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic. Of those four, you can get a version of two them at no charge. All you have to do is go to their website and download the product. PAF is free http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.… Legacy is also free http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ and has a user group on Rootsweb http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.softwa… where a user could get an answer to most any question within a day or so of asking….there could be others not sure about other user groups.

There is good information in the genealogy community that Legacy has plans to be integrated with the LDS/Mormon site like Family Tree Makers is with Ancestry.com. What this will entail or how it will work remains to be seen but since the LDS site is free it could make Legacy software a good choice as the promise to keep the software free to existing users…that could mean paid subscribers only…again not sure of the specifics, however, the upgrade is about $35.00 to $39.00 depending on the options you choose. PAF will not be upgraded but there is no talk of it being discontinued either.

If you need a physical gift for under the tree and can get to a Sam’s Club, they usually have a Family Tree Maker [latest version 2010] with some Ancestry.com free time…depending on the version and price[discounted] it varies from 60 days to one year. Some people love Ancestry.com and others, not so much. It really depends on experience, sometimes when people figure out that they have been researching the wrong ancestor because of non-sourced records they get frustrated and give up.

There is a good tutorial for those who are new to family research at:
http://rwguide.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ Make sure that you recommend the tutorial and the Yahoo!Ask genealogy section archive.

      Good luck.

Authorware iis what we use to create these tests

      Introducing Authorware 7

Macromedia Authorware 7 is the leading rich-media authoring tool for creating web and online learning. Authorware integrates graphics, sound, animation, text, and video into compelling rich-media learning solutions.

Authorware is optimized for building e-learning applications. The Authorware interface provides a fast and easy environment for creating interactive applications. Drag-and-drop icons support rapid application prototyping and development without the need for extensive scripting. The flowline provides an intuitive representation of the structure of large, highly branched learning applications.

Authorware 7 has been updated with a new interface. The new look includes panels that dock on the right side of the application window and a new Property inspector that significantly streamlines workflow.

Scripting in Authorware is now possible in JavaScript as well as Authorware Script Language. The Calculation editor lets you specify either language for entering and running scripts. The Preferences dialog box now lets you specify the appearance of script in both languages.

A major addition to Authorware 7 is XML import and export capability. Not only can you import XML files into Authorware but you can export an entire Authorware piece as XML. For example, you can import a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation as XML into Authorware, and use the PowerPoint slides as the foundation for building an Authorware application.

Authorware now supports DVD. You can set up Authorware to automatically start and stop at specific points within a DVD movie, and give students playback controls to play, pause, or replay movie segments.

Improvements to Trace/Debug include new Stop, Start, and Wait commands to give you more control over debugging.

Authorware 7 also includes support for Mac OS X playback as well as ADL SCORM API Adapter Objects. Additionally, the new Learning Object Packager creates SCORM-compliant learning objects from Authorware files.

Authorware 7 is part of the eLearning studio group of integrated, open, and scalable learning tools and technologies. This system provides a complete e-learning solution, including the creation, delivery, and management of enterprise learning programs.

I’m going to college next year and I’m going to take all honors (algebra2 honors, English 2 honors, Physical science honors, world geography honors, geometry honors-I’m one of the few people in class that got it). Should I take medical or programming? I’m way better at math. Note the advantages, pay, employment. Educated answers please.

You sound like a person with lots of talent. That’s great. You have lots of choices.

You are mentioning two highly challenging fields that take a lifetime to master — medicine and software development. Either one will take at least ten thousand hours of doing it to get good. So, it’s really important to pick something you enjoy doing — because you will be doing a lot of it.

I made the switch from medical studies to software years ago, and it was the right thing for me. For me there was more creative scope in software. I probably would have had made more money if I were a famous doctor, but, hey, I didn’t like the politics of academic medicine very much. Plus, who says I would be famous?

Don’t worry about money at this stage. In medical training you’ll make forty cents an hour while you’re in training (exaggeration), and you won’t have any time to spend it (truth).

Everybody needs physicians, and software development can be outsourced. The practice of medicine is all about blood, guts, and bones, which don’t change as fast as technology. So those are a couple of things to think about.

      Good luck finding your calling.

“should software be free” is not a new topic. Offcourse the name might be different. since so many years people are reasearching on Open Source software. there is a few differences between your topic and open source software.

But apart from all theese topics, i would prefer some things like, IT in Human lives how it can better the lives of people, Is IT is a science? etc..

virtual reality software for a research project?
I am doing a research into consumer use of mobile games and applications. I want to develop real-life situations to see how they would react…

What would be a good virtual reality software to use to develop real-life situations? I need to create different kinds of settings: outdoors, at home, friends’ home, etc. It would also need to be somewhat interactive.

Would I be able to do it within a time frame of 2 months (I do not have any experience with it)? Can anyone please suggest a suitable software?

    Thank you!

What are major differences between software engineering and computer science research?
I know research can be done in many fields, but I assume there has to be day-to-day activities that are the same. What is a more competitive field? Are software engineers limited to working in a business environment? What are pay differences?

A software engineer focus his work on the elegance of his code, the code should work and be the best like a typical programmer. While he wont discover new techniques or paradigms. Those guys can get payed in higher rates or lower as it depends on the facility he work at. The software engineer usually make money in his entire life no more no less. unless he work at a big company which will make his name. The computer science researcher don’t pay much attention on the elegance of his code, the main purpose for his programming is to prove an idea or a theory in a computer science field such as Artificial Intelligence so the code is not meant to be perfect. A CS researcher can and always try to discover new things and prove it on his way. They get payed as high as any modern university or research facility could offer, and they have a bright future by means of discoveries, reputation, and fortune.

      Hi
i am studying in electrical engineering power field but i get projects from companies and they pay me for that.
my work involves coding by c and also electronic knowledge.
i do my projects with microcontroller AVR and ARM.
they need c programming language to control the logical AVR and ARM gates.
with them you can control the other electrical instruments that are used in your board.
many electronic companies are interested in such persons.
first you should study in AVR and ARM and after that you can do simple projects on your own.
after that i suggest you to make a group and talk to companies.
it is interesting and makes you enjoy doing new things.
i hope that it will be useful.
